Another night brought another comeback victory for the Billings Mustangs (2-0) as they defeated the Idaho Falls Chukars (0-2) 17-10 on Wednesday night at Melaleuca Field.
Billings opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, but Idaho Falls answered emphatically in the bottom half with an eight-run outburst capped by a grand slam from Sam Canton.
Trailing 8-1 after one inning, the Mustangs wasted little time beginning their comeback. Billings plated four runs in the second inning before the Chukars added another run of their own in the bottom half to take a 9-5 lead.
The Mustangs responded again in the third, scoring four more times to even the game at nine apiece. Patrick Mills played a major role in the rally, launching a solo homer in the second inning before adding a two-run blast in the third. The multi-homer effort is the second of Mills' career and his first since June 1, 2024 against the Boise Hawks. The slugging first baseman now has three home runs in the first two games of the season.
Billings took the lead for good in the fourth inning with a five-run frame to move in front 14-9. Idaho Falls never trimmed the deficit to fewer than five runs the rest of the way.
Carlos Anziani (1-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for Billings. After allowing a run in the second inning, the right-hander settled in to toss three consecutive scoreless frames. Rafael Brito (0-1) took the loss for Idaho Falls.
The victory gives the Mustangs their first series win in Idaho Falls since August 2022.
Billings will look for the sweep Thursday night as Jackson Betancourt makes his Mustangs debut against Wilton Castillo of the Chukars. First pitch from Melaleuca Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
